Lincoln bird county set for Dec. 17

People who like birds and want to help conserve species can join Lincoln's Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 17.
Volunteers spend a day identifying and counting the birds in a defined 15-mile-diameter circle.
Information is entered in a database and, when combined with other studies, gives researchers a picture of changing bird populations, the Wachiska Audubon Society said in a news release.
Field counters cover specific areas of the circle, while feeder watchers monitor backyard feeders.
Christmas bird counts nationwide all occur between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, and birds are counted from midnight to midnight.
Last year, 61,359,451 birds and 2,250 different species were counted in Nebraska. Eleven counts took place in Nebraska. Lincoln and Omaha counters each identified 78 species and Lake McConaughy counters identified 109.
