Man walks into police station with loaded assault rifle

A man walked into a West Side police station early Thursday morning with a loaded assault rifle and said he was turning it in, Chicago police said.
News Affairs said the 28-year-old man walked into the Harrison District station with an AR-15 assault rifle just before 4 a.m. He did not point the gun at anyone, police said.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. His name has not been released, and
he was not arrested as police initially indicated.

The man entered the Harrison District police station at 3151 W. Harrison St. about 4 a.m. with a fully-loaded AR-15 assault rifle and 30-round magazine, police said. The man said he was declaring martial law, but did not point the gun at anybody or fire any shots.

The man was not declaring martial law against police, however, and he did not point the gun at anybody or fire any shots.

Officers immediately tried to calm the man and were able to defuse the rifle and disarm him without a struggle, police said.

Police said the rifle was in full view and the man made no effort to conceal it when he walked into the station. It was “very much visible,” police said.

He told officers he found the rifle a few days ago after seeing someone throw it over a fence, police said. The man “appeared to be a bit unstable” and police called the man’s family. The family had him signed into John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County for an evaluation, police said.

The 28-year-old man was did not appear to be intoxicated and police believe he may have suffered from a mental illness.

He will not be charged with anything, police said Thursday afternoon.
