Chemical Spill in Williamsville

WILLIAMSVILLE -- Williamsville residents who live within one-quarter mile of Love’s Truck Stop off Interstate 55 were advised to stay inside Monday night because of a hazardous material leak.

Tom Nases, a lieutenant with the Williamsville Fire Department, said a tractor-trailer truck parked at Love’s leaked a hazardous liquid called ethyl acrylate stabilized.

Love’s, along with the attached McDonalds and the Huddle House, all near the Interstate 55 exit ramp at Williamsville, were evacuated. People were at first advised not to use their furnaces and other heating devices, but that warning was dropped later in the evening.

The chemical, which is flammable, can cause dizziness and nausea to some people if inhaled, Nases said. Authorities first arrived at the site about 5:30 p.m.

Authorities were called to the truck stop, just off I-55, on Monday
around 5:30pm. Reports came in of an industrial chemical, Ethol Alkaline, leaking from an 18-wheeler-truck.

EPA and HazMat officials were called to the scene to help clean the spill.

Residents were asked to stay in their homes and shut their windows while, the Sangamon Sheriff's Office helped block off traffic a quarter mile West of the scene.
