Few Inches Of Snow Leads To Few Hundred Accidents

A little bit of snow made for an active day on roads for the Minnesota State Patrol with a few hundred accidents and spin-outs.

According to the Lt. Eric Roeske, between 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, there were 189 crashes statewide with 22 crashes involving injuries. The patrol also dealt with 193 vehicles that either went off the road or spun out.

In the metro, during the same time period, there were 103 crashes with 11 involving injuries. Also in the metro, a total of 103 vehicles either went off the road or spun out.

Also Roads all across Marathon County were hazardous, said Lt. Mark Wagers of the Marathon County Sheriff's Department. "We've basically got cars going into the ditch every which way," he said.

As of 9 p.m. Saturday, Wagers said about 90 calls of crashes or cars sliding into ditches had come into the Marathon County Dispatch center.

He expected the calls to come in throughout the night. "We'll easily have a hundred," Wagers said.

Wagers said he was not aware of any serious injuries from any of the crashes.

In Wausau, vehicles slid off streets and were hitting curbs and street lamps, but there were no crashes with injuries as of 8:30 p.m., said Lt. Matt Barnes of the Wausau Police Department. He wasn't sure how many crashes had occurred, but "probably a solid dozen," Barnes said. Four cars had slid off the road on the Franklin Street hill alone, he said.

As of 9 p.m., there had been no collisions in Lincoln County, said a 911 dispatcher, but a few cars had gone into ditches.

North central Wisconsin, including Wisconsin Rapids and Wausau and points north, was under a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. today, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists said that 3 to 6 inches of snow were expected to fall through the night.

National Weather Service forecasts called for a 40 percent chance of snow before noon today.

The afternoon was expected to be cloudy, with a high temperature near 34 degrees.
