Loan shop owner fires shot at trio of robbers

Murfreesboro-- Local loan service stores in the past month took a violent turn Wednesday afternoon when the owner of Tennessee Title Loans fired his handgun at three robbers who burst into his store demanding cash.

Murfreesboro Police spokesman said three black men dressed in all black and carrying handguns entered Tennessee Title Loans in the Jackson Heights Plaza, 806 N.W. Broad St., around 12:15 p.m. and demanded money from a clerk.

"The owner was in the store and complied with the robber's demands, handing over the money," Evans said. "At some point, the owner then drew his weapon and fired one shot in self-defense at the three robbers, who then left the business."

Evans said investigators don't believe any of the three robbers were hit by the shot, which shattered the storefront window. The robbers left the store in a gold vehicle, which was later found by Murfreesboro Police officers who set up a perimeter.

Authorities were also able to capture one potential suspect, according to Evans. That suspect was still being interviewed by police Wednesday afternoon.

Police haven't released how much money was actually taken by the robbers.

"They left with an undetermined amount of money," said MPD spokesman Evans.

Authorities were still interviewing other witnesses to the robbery around 1 p.m., according to Evans.

No customers were inside the loan store when the robbery occurred, but several people were in the Jackson Heights Plaza, according to police.

The robbery of Tennessee Title Loans is the second time in a little more than a month that the store has been hit.

A lone suspect in the Oct. 10 robbery of the store was described as an elderly white man, wearing a blue jean jacket, black shirt, blue jeans, brown hat and rubber gloves.

No surveillance video was ever released of that robbery, in which about $1,000 was taken.

Three other robberies — two at Cash Express at 1604 Memorial Blvd. and one at First Cash at 1802 Memorial Blvd. — have occurred at Murfreesboro loan service stores over the past month.

Cash Express was robbed Monday by two black men wearing masks — one of whom carried a long gun. The two men were dressed in dark, hooded sweatshirts, according to police.
