Winslow crash under investigation

WINSLOW -- Three women were taken to the hospital after two cars collided on China Road early Sunday morning in Winslow.


Two of the women had serious injuries and police were not releasing details about their condition Sunday afternoon.


A 32-year-old Winslow woman told police she lost control of her car, crossed the centerline and struck another car head-on shortly after 6 a.m., according to Winslow police Officer Linda Smedberg.


She was driving west toward Winslow and rounding a corner when icy road conditions caused her to skid across the road into the path of the other car, driven by a a 68-year-old woman from Waterville, Smedberg said.


The Waterville woman had serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a nearby field, where a LifeFlight helicopter landed and then flew her to the hospital, Smedberg said Sunday afternoon.


Her 48-year-old passenger from Fairfield also had serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville, she said. Both women were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.


The Winslow woman had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Waterville, Smedberg said. She was not wearing her seatbelt during the crash.


Smedberg would not release the names of the women or other details about their condition. She said the information would be released Monday, after family members could be notified about the crash.


The Winslow police are investigating an early morning crash on Route 137, otherwise known as China Road.


Police say two cars crashed head on around 6:00 Sunday morning. One of the cars traveling west lost control hitting a car traveling east on China Road.


Two people were transported to Maine General in Waterville and a third was taken by life flight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The extent of their injuries are unknown.


The accident is under investigation but police feel black ice on the roadway may have played a role.
