Man killed in hit-and-run after helping motorist

FAIRFIELD, CA - A Good Samaritan was struck, killed and left in a Fairfield parking lot Thursday morning, say police.

According to investigators, it appeared the 70-year-old man had stopped to give the driver of a recreational vehicle a battery jump-start in the business parking lot on the 4400 block of Central Way. Somehow, said police spokesman Greg Hurlbut, the RV hit the man during the process and its driver fled.

The victim was found down in the parking lot at 10 a.m. as was his damaged vehicle.

Officers had a description of the RV and located it minutes later, Hurlbut said.

The driver, 52-year-old Michael Wilbert, of Fairfield, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. Alcohol did not appear to play a role, Hurlbut said.

The RV driver, 52-year-old Michael Wilbert, has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run for allegedly leaving the scene without helping the victim.
Police say 70-year-old Rudy Gonzales stopped in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant Thursday morning to help Wilbert. Lt. Greg Hurlbut says Gonzales somehow was struck by the RV while getting the engine started.
Gonzales died at the scene.
Police tracked Wilbert to a nearby business, where he was arrested. Hurlbut says alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
