Maine officials find car, warn public NH escapee may be 'desperate'

ALFRED, Maine  - "We strongly believe that David Hobson has acquired a firearm and he has made threats to specific individuals," warns Lieutenant Louise Nyitray of the Maine State Police.

David Hobson, from Alfred, escaped Thursday from the Carroll County House of Corrections in Ossipee, New Hampshire. He has eluded police since then, and they're now warning people in his home community.

Police aren't certain exactly what kind of gun Hobson is armed with, but they say he has fired it at least once.

The Maine State Police believe that Hobson jumped the razor wire at the prison on Thursday with the intention of harming two specific people. Those people, whose identities are not being released, have been warned and moved to a safe location.

Details from the Maine State Police, the Warden Service, the York County Sheriff's Department, the Sanford Police Department, the U.S. Marshals and the New Hampshire State Police's Air Wing searched for Hobson on Saturday. They focused on Alfred, Sanford and Kennebunk.

Maine authorities announced this morning they located the 2004 Toyota Highlander they suspect Hobson stole from a Wakefield, N.H. parking lot. The Highlander was stolen Friday morning and located overnight on Wichers Mill Road at the Sanford-Alfred town line in Maine.

Police said they believe Hobson still is in the area, probably in nearby woods.

They found a considerable amount of blood in the vehicle, confirming their belief that Hobson was seriously injured while scaling the prison razor wire fence Thursday, McCausland said..

“This is a time when he could get very desperate. That is why we warn the public to be on the lookout for him,” McCausland said.
Police are asking for the public's help in locating the 2004 blue Honda Accord which they believe Hobson stole Thursday night or early Friday morning in Sanford. The car bears a Maine license plate number of 1355MV.

After Hobson escaped the New Hampshire jail, the manhunt for him quickly expanded into Maine given Hobson is suspected to have escaped from jail to hurt two York County individuals, who have been relocated to a safe place, Maine State Police have said.

Hobson's father, Glenn Hobson, 55, was arrested Friday night with hindering apprehension and resisting arrest. He allegedly left medical supplies and provisions outside his Alfred, Maine home for his son, police said.

Carroll County High Sheriff Christopher Conley said that police received a report of a vehicle that was stolen from the Won Ton's Restaurant parking lot sometime overnight.

The car is a black four-door 2004 Toyota Highland with New Hampshire registration 1481896. The inmate, David Hobson, 33, of Alfred, Maine, was awaiting trial on a burglary charge when he climbed the razor-wire fence surrounding the recreation yard at the jail and ran off into the woods Thursday about 2:15 p.m. Conley said Hobson cut himself on the razor wire.

Local and state police launched an extensive search that included four teams of search dogs and the state police helicopter equipped with infrared heat-seeking cameras. However, the air search over the 1,000-acre county complex campus and abutting roads was terminated after a three-and-a-half hours.

Conley said following this morning's stolen car report, a trained bloodhound searched the suspected trail at the lot and confirmed the scent to be Hobson's at about 1 p.m. on Friday.

“We're pretty confident he got into the car and stole it,” said Conley, adding that prior to this recent finding, he thought Hobson might not have made it out of the woods last night.

The search for Hobson has spread into Maine. Hobson has family in Alfred, Maine. The York County Sheriff's Department and the Maine State Police are involved in the investigation, along with local police departments. Conley said tips are coming in from people who know Hobson, but nothing so specific as to his whereabouts.

Hobson has a record of mostly property crimes in Maine and New Hampshire, and was facing additional burglary charges out of Wakefield, Ossipee and Sandwich, police said Friday.

Anyone with information about Hobson is asked to call the Carroll County Sheriff's Department at 539-2284.
